TA History
In the fall of 1983, a group of community members — John Dobbin, Katie Owen, Karen Seaberg, Ruth Wallace, and Dr. George White — recognized the need for an organized theatre arts program in Atchison. Their vision and dedication led to the creation of the Atchison Performing Arts Association (APAA) in 1984, with Jackie Hinton serving as the first Managing Director.
In 1988, APAA became known as Theatre Atchison and continued expanding opportunities for the community through the launch of SummerStage Youth Theatre, the introduction of season memberships, and additional leadership support. What began with only the upper level of the building eventually grew to include office space and costume storage in the lower level as Theatre Atchison continued to evolve.
The theatre itself carries a rich history. Following a fire in the 1930s, the space was transformed from traditional pew seating to theater seating. In 2005, Executive Director Travis Grossman led a renovation of the auditorium, updating the seating area and enhancing the overall experience for audiences.
Today, Theatre Atchison continues its mission of enriching the community through the performing arts. Each season includes four mainstage productions, four youth productions, additional special programming, and year-round opportunities for involvement. Supported by dedicated staff, volunteers, artists, and a Board of Directors, Theatre Atchison remains committed to bringing people together through creativity, education, and live entertainment.
